Only the best brandsIf you attended the last hookah fair in Seville, Shishamesse, or if you've been paying attention to social media in recent months, you've likely heard about Blackburn. This is a brand of black leaf tobacco that stands out for having a slightly more exquisite manufacturing process compared to what we're used to in the Spanish market.
The brand, although originally from the United States, does not reach us from there. The entity responsible for all of this is BurnTobaccocompany, a Russian company that embraced the American brand, adapted it to the tastes of European and Russian consumers, and also created a conglomerate of brands that includes others like Overdose and Banger. These brands, although not yet known in the Spanish market, may be seen in our tobacco shops in the future following the recent arrival of Blackburn. For context, BurnTobacco was founded in 2017 and has since won numerous awards in its category, including the award for best tobacco of the year from 2019 to 2022, according to the brand itself.
But let's go back to the beginning, the tobacco itself. Blackburn is a brand where, as we mentioned, its recipe stands out above other companies in the sector. To begin with, it consists of a selective blend of different Burley leaves and flavorings from all over the world, which is why it achieves such well-crafted and exclusive flavors right from the start. On the other hand, something that may also catch our attention is the inclusion of corn syrup among its components. This comes from its American heritage and is used to give the leaves high heat resistance and better adherence to the flavorings.
The arrival of black tobacco is always noteworthy. It is true that it is not a product for all types of consumers, but over time, more brands have been entering the Spanish market, and with that, the black range has been gaining more followers than a few years ago. This is the case with Blackburn, a brand with remarkable flavor and quality but also more nicotine than blonde tobaccos, which may deter less experienced hookah enthusiasts. Whatever your case, don't worry, because at 1001 Cachimbas, we will explain how to pack this brand to get the most out of it, but we'll also show you how to reduce the throat hit and nicotine level a bit.
According to the brand itself, the best way to enjoy its variety of leaves is by using a traditional bowl, with a dense pack and using a Kaloud. This not only helps to capture the flavors and nuances of the brand better but also makes the nicotine hit more noticeable. Specifically, if we're bold, Blackburn assures that with a pack that touches the Kaloud heat management device, the throat sensation will be impeccable, and given the high resistance of its leaves, we shouldn't fear it burning quickly.
However, if you're looking for a more relaxed smoking session with a lesser perception of nicotine levels, another recommendation they make is to use a phunnel bowl and do a slightly less dense pack, letting the tobacco fall into the bowl without applying much pressure when accommodating it to place the foil and a provost with two coals. Our impression? It is true that in Kaloud, the buzz sensation is somewhat noticeable, but the pull isn't as strong as they promise, so we think it's a relatively accessible brand for newcomers to the world of black tobacco, from which you can get a lot of value using traditional-style bowls.
As for flavors, we could say that this is where the brand shines, even more than its nicotine content. Among the flavors that have entered the Spanish market, we find true gems that are not as present in our tobacco shops, such as “Green T,” its green tea flavor. It's a brand that does not sacrifice its flavors in favor of nicotine content, so we can assure you that it's well worth trying if you're a bit tired of conventional flavors. Even so, as we'll detail further below, among the flavors that have entered our country, there's a wide variety, including traditional flavors like lemon or grape, which we're so used to, but with the peculiarities and unique characteristics of Blackburn.
As we were saying, the list of flavors with which Blackburn enters is very varied, from traditional flavors to some more exotic ones. The list we have so far is this:
However, it doesn't stop there, as it's possible that soon we'll have the brand's "shok" range: particularly sour flavors that mimic the taste of “Center Shock” candies, something we've already seen in the current market with Hookain's “ZentaSchox” flavor, and this time, we could try it in the black tobacco range from Blackburn. Based on what they announced on social media and some content creators in the hookah world, the "shok" flavors that could enter would be "Anansshok," which is a sour pineapple, "Lemnshok," an even more sour and citrusy lemon than the one the brand already offers, and "Kramshok," a blueberry… can you guess how?
If you're interested, the format in which it has arrived so far is 100 grams in round plastic containers with a protector to prevent the molasses from leaking inside, priced at 14.95 euros. Yes, we know that this initial format might discourage you from buying it, both because of the price and the risk of trying a flavor without knowing if you'll like it. If you're a fan of black tobacco, we guarantee that at least two or three flavors will appeal to you, as they are very well-made and have a good dose of nicotine. If, on the other hand, you're just starting out and still hesitant, as you can see, the brand has entered with plenty of simple flavors that can be perfectly used in mixes, so it might be the ideal option to start getting familiar with the black tobacco range. Either way, we totally recommend you try it, as it's very likely to become one of your favorite brands. Let us know what you think!
